The 5 Step Guide

to Launching Your Business

WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE NO TIME OR MONEY

Step 1: Build your beautiful brand

A. WRITE YOUR "WHY" STATEMENT - 1 HR, $0

Identify the core reason “WHY” you are starting your business. Define your purpose, and everything else will fall into place. Ask yourself questions such as, “what benefit will my business bring to my ideal client,” and “what is the highest benefit my business brings to me?” Every time you have a decision to make, pick the option that is most in line with your Why. 

B. PICK A NAME, URL AND SOCIAL MEDIA HANDLES - 30 MINS, $11 (GODADDY PRICING)

If you are going to be on multiple social media channels (which you should be!) you would be surprised at how few "good names" are left that can be used across all channels!  DO NOT SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON THIS! This is where a lot of people get stuck and they end up losing momentum.

Set a time limit for yourself of a few days, and if you still don't LOVE your choice, choose it anyways, you can always change it later (I changed mine and no one even noticed!).

Even if you are not going to post right away save your name and register your URL, this will get you pumped!

C. IDENTIFY YOUR IDEAL CUSTOMER - 2 HRS, $0

This is, without a doubt, the most important step. What does your customer want? What are your customer's desires? You need to go really deep here, and when you think you are deep enough, go even deeper. 

This is a great time to interview friends or family members that you think identify with your ideal client. Look for any key words that they use.

D. CREATE AN AVATAR - 1 HR, $0

The Avatar is slightly different than the ideal customer profile, think of this as bringing your ideal customer to life!  It may feel kind of silly, but give her a name, decide where she eats, what she reads, what time she goes to bed, EVERYTHING. This will majorly come in handy when you lay out your product/service offering!

E. SELECT YOUR BRANDING, COLORS, LOGO AND/OR FONT - 30 MINS, $0-$10 (LOGO CREATION ON FIVERR)

Again, do not get too caught up here. Select something that will attract your ideal client. There are tons of resources out there on Google to tell you what colours specific customer types are drawn to. You can get a logo made for $5-$10 on fiverr.com, again this can be changed down the road. BETTER FINISHED THAN PERFECT!

F. TAKE SOME PHOTOS - 30 MINS, $0

Start snapping pics right away that would work well on your social media! Find some "idol brands" that you love and see what you like and don't like. Smart phones these days have wicked cameras, so just start a bank of pics right away! Scared of selfies? No need to rush into them. You can also re-post photos from another brand as long as you credit them!

G. LAUNCH YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA- - 30 MINS, $0

Yup, you heard me right. Launch this baby before you even have a website. Get used to what it feels like to post every day and practice what works for you! You can tell close friends and family to start following you to get warmed up because "putting yourself out there" can obvs be terrifying. You will find your groove! Just put "website coming soon" in your profile.

Once you have your URL and your Social Media rolling you are pretty much IN ACTION! You will start attracting your tribe ASAP!

Step 2: Launch your website! It's all about the inter-web. 

A. SELECT A HOST AND A TEMPLATE - 20 MINS, $8 (SQUARESPACE PRICING)

The main choices for a DIY website are Wordpress, Squarespace and Shopify. I suggest reading up on them and selecting what is best for your specific needs, but I will give you my two cents too...

If you are product based, use Shopify. They have great support, nice templates and better SEO. Wordpress is also great for SEO, but costs more for better customization.

If you are blog or service based, I LOVE Squarespace, although, Wordpress is considered to be "better," and they have more templates. Squarespace is VERY user friendly, even if you have no IT skills. Your business will be continuously changing when you first start so you will want something that you can edit on the fly. And YES you can figure it out on your own. If I did, you can. 

B. PHOTOSHOOT - 2 HRS, $100 (ROUGH ESTIMATE OF PRICING)

Do not let this be terrifying to you! First, take an inventory of what photos you need for your website (one for the home page, an "about me", and whatever else). 

Make sure you note what size you need for your website or whether they are horizontal or vertical!

You have a few options for pulling a shoot together on the cheap, or you can just hire someone for about $250. Your cheap options are to find someone you know, or to find an amateur photographer who is looking to build a portfolio. Many photographers who are just starting out are willing to work for trades, also known as time for prints (TFP). Model Mayhem is a great site for TFP! Your second option is to just do it yourself. I know a lot of people that take their own photos with a smart phone and they actually turn out pretty good! You can always swap them out once you start to bring in some money! 

Schedule a day to look your absolute best and take some snaps!

C. WRITE YOUR CONTENT - 2 HRS, $0

You are going to need at least a few blurbs on your site about who you are and what your business is about. Write in a voice that your ideal customer understands. Use contractions and be relatable! Write at an 8th grade level, use LOTS of uppercase letters and bolding for dramatic effect! 

D. BUILD YOUR SITE - 2 HRS, $0

Now that your content and photos are all ready, toss those babies into your site! You can start showing some friends and family to get opinions and suggestions but don't pick more than three people or it just gets confusing. Try to ask people who are inline with your ideal client.

Your website platform might be confusing to learn but spend the time to get to know how it works because you are going to be managing it for a while! You want to master this, trust me!

E. START BLOGGING - 2 HRS, $0

Guess what, I am not a university level writer (not even close), but there are a ton of people out there who don't care how good you are as long as you are speaking their language and providing them valuable content.

Just start with one blog a week! Write a list of ten topics your ideal customer would love to get info on and give it to them! This is an amazing way to relate to your ideal clients! Think about what they need to hear and write to them!

Step 3: Whatcha sellin'? Nail down your product/service offering

A. NAIL DOWN YOUR OFFERING AND PRICING, 2HRS, $0

This is pretty vague, but I assume you already have an idea of what you want to be selling. Now become an expert at it. If you are having trouble take a look at what your ideal client needs and also what those "business idols" we selected are doing. What do you like and dislike? What can you do better? How can you really HELP PEOPLE!?

Do you not sell yourself short when it comes to pricing. What would you be willing to pay for the same services?

B. PICK YOUR SYSTEMS - 2HRS, $0 (LOTS OF FREE OPTIONS OUT THERE)

This is a great time to figure out what your sales, customer retention and on-boarding processes are going to look like. No matter what your business is, you will want a way to collect emails. Make sure you have this feature on your site.

I suggest using Mailchimp to store the email addresses and communicate with your clients and potential clients. 

Do you need contracts between you and your clients? Do you need to manage shipping product? Do you need to provide an appointment booking tool to your clients? There are tons of low-cost options out there. 

C. CREATE AN IRRESISTIBLE OPT-IN OFFER (MUCH LIKE THIS GUIDE) -5 HRS, $0

You really want to collect those email addresses, so create an incentive for your customer when they enter it. What does your customer need most? Give a slice of it to them for free! Their email address is super valuable in building a relationship with them before, during and after you make a sale.

Mailchimp can be set up to deliver your gift to them in the reply email once they confirm their subscription to your list. 

Step 4: Market your products and services

A. SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING - 2HRS, $0

Take a step back and review your ideal client analysis. Where does your ideal client hang out online? Is she an avid pinner? An Insta-addict? A Facebook fiend? Pick one or 2 verticals only, and become an expert! Gain trust with your following and always provide them with valuable content that THEY NEED!  

B. FACEBOOK ADS - 1HR, $4/DAY

Facebook ads are a whole other beast of social media marketing. They require a lot of thought and careful targeting. Keep your ideal client in mind when you do your targeting and don't be too broad. The more specific you can get the better your return will be.

Try a few different versions of your ad starting at $2/day to see which one is getting the best results and then invest more into the winner. 

Use a really appealing photo for the ad and link it to a landing page, rather than your website, so your new lead has one focus, entering her email address (which is GOLD for you). 

C. NETWORKING - 1HR/WEEK, $0-$50/EVENT

As much as being a hermit is conducive to your new lifestyle as an entrepreneur, you need to hit the pavement! When you put yourself out there in person you can open yourself up to new opportunities, clients and friends. Having like-minded, entrepreneurial friends will be very important to your success, no matter how big of a loner you think you are. 

Find some local networking groups, pop-up events and workshops that suit your target audience (and you!) and show up. 

D. FREEBIES - 4HRS, $0

I know we already went over your free opt-in gift, but now you will want to think about doing SOME work for free. Don’t give away your entire offering, but how can you give a snippet of your value to gain connections?

E. TESTIMONIALS - 4HRS, $0

Testimonials are very powerful for a new business and make you look and feel more legit. Even if you have not had any real clients yet, give a portion of your services for free to a few select people (strangers are the best because they will give honest feedback) in exchange for a testimonial then post that baby on your website. 

Steps 5: Enhance your mindset

A. ASK AN EXPERT, 1HR/WEEK, $0-$2000 (COACHING PROGRAM PRICES VARY DEPENDING ON LENGTH)

This is the ONE THING that I do not suggest you skimp on. If you are going to start a business, I do not doubt your ability to DIY it completely, BUT insecurities, fears and perceived weaknesses are so diverse from person to person. 

Having a coach or mentor to guide you is going to work wonders for your business AND your sanity while you make this giant transition. I held onto my business idea for three years before I hired my coach. I was yo-yoing back and forth between doing it, and not doing it. Once I hired my coach it only took me eight weeks to COMPLETELY launch a business that I was proud of and that I LOVED. 

It is a SMALL PRICE TO PAY for an entire business!

I get that it is a scary investment, but trust me when I say that I did not think I could afford it either. I had to max out my credit cards to pay for my coach, and told my fiance that I could not chip in for groceries for two months but that every dime I made when I launched would go back to repaying him (which happened VERY QUICKLY!). Instead of saying you can't afford it, say "how can I afford it". You will be glad you did.

B. ACCOUNTABILITY, 10MINS/WEEK, $0

One things that sets us all of the right path is an accountability partner. If you have a coach, that will be your ticket, but if not, ask a friend to help you manage your tasks and make sure you are following through on the commitments you make to yourself. 

C. POSITIVE MINDSET 15-20 MINS/DAY, $0

You literally cannot have a business without this. You have to get real with yourself and check in with your self-talk and inner thoughts. If you say things like "I can't afford a coach for my business," you are sending the message out to the universe that you don't think your business is worth money. 

You have to analyse your fears and separate them from your gut feelings. If you are fearful that you are not going to have the energy or drive to follow through, you will make it so. 

If every day you tell yourself that you are already living your dream (once you start your business you literally should be so proud), then that feeling will continue to manifest.  

BONUS: MINDSET PRACTICES

PRACTICE 1:

There is no doubt that you are going to feel overwhelmed at times when you are starting your own business and that's okay! 

In order to really honour your feelings you have to accept that there will be those ups and downs. When you start to feel down, start practicing pride and gratitude journalling. 

Every morning, write out 5 things that you are proud of. Some should be related to building your business, but the rest can be about anything! THEN at night, write down the three best things that happened that day related to your business that you are really grateful for. 

If you can put yourself into the mindset of being proud and happy, more things will start to happen to bring more good vibes into your life!

PRACTICE 2:

Money mindset is without a doubt, the most important part of starting a business. You’re afraid to make big investments because it’s really scary but at the same time, failing to make that investment could send the wrong vibes out to the universe, like that your business idea is not worth the money.

The best way to get your money mindset on track FAST is to take a look at where you were during your biggest money struggles, and realize that you are still here! If you learn to not fear, you will realize that you actually have more money than you ever thought!

Trying writing down your negative money memories and forgiving yourself for them! Actually write down your apologies and re-read them every morning!
